Fatal Helicopter Crash Claims Iraqi Airman During Election Security Duty

BAGHDAD: A member of the Iraqi Air Force lost his life, and another sustained injuries in a military helicopter accident while participating in a crucial security mission for provincial elections, as announced by the defense ministry on Tuesday.

The incident occurred when the helicopter faced a “technical problem” shortly after taking off from an air base located outside Tuz Khurmatu, south of Kirkuk, on Monday evening, resulting in the crash that tragically claimed the pilot’s life and left the second officer injured, according to the ministry.

Although Monday’s provincial council elections marked the first in a decade, they transpired without any noteworthy events, despite the lingering threat posed by insurgents entrenched in remote desert and mountainous regions.

The electoral commission disclosed a turnout of 41 percent, with preliminary results expected later on Tuesday.
