Ethiopian Parliament Approves Bilateral Trade Agreement with Pakistan

The Embassy of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia (FDRE) in Pakistan announced on Monday that the House of the Peoples Representatives of FDRE had given unanimous approval to the bilateral trade agreement inked by the two nations on February 14 of this year. This agreement aims to enhance bilateral trade between Ethiopia and Pakistan.

During the 8th regular meeting of the 3rd year of the House of the Peoples Representatives, the Standing Committee on Trade and Tourism submitted the trade agreement to the Ethiopian Parliament for approval, according to an embassy press release.

The primary goal of the bilateral trade agreement is to strengthen trade cooperation between Ethiopia and Pakistan, fostering economic and commercial ties.

Jemal Beker Abdula, the Ethiopian Ambassador in Pakistan, hailed the approval of the agreement as a “major breakthrough” in the bilateral relations between the two countries. He emphasized that this landmark agreement would significantly augment the existing bilateral trade, currently valued at over $80 million. Additionally, it sets the stage for establishing a joint action committee on trade and promoting robust institutional connections between Ethiopia and Pakistan.

Ambassador Abdula extended congratulations to the business communities of both Ethiopia and Pakistan, foreseeing positive outcomes resulting from the approved agreement. He expressed optimism that the new year would mark a transformative phase in the history of bilateral trade, anticipating increased business and trade activities between the two nations.

Referring to significant developments, Ambassador Abdula highlighted the exchange of over 70 businessmen and investors visiting Ethiopia in March and a subsequent trip of more than 50 Ethiopian businessmen to Pakistan in May of the same year.
